RSES Membership & Registration
Information and Guidance for Prospective Registrants
Eligibility and Registration Requirements
Membership of the Register of Security Engineers and Specialists (RSES) provides independent recognition of professional competence, experience and commitment within the security profession. If you are considering applying for registration, this page explains the eligibility requirements, application routes and benefits of becoming an RSES registrant, helping you determine the most appropriate path to membership.
Eligibility Requirements
If you are considering applying for RSES registration, you must be able to demonstrate the knowledge, experience and professional competence required for your chosen category. Registration is open to professionals whose work contributes to the protection of the built environment, infrastructure and organisations, including those working across physical, technical, information and personnel security disciplines. In general, applicants will be expected to:
- Demonstrate an appropriate level of security knowledge through academic qualifications or equivalent professional experience.
- Show practical experience applying security knowledge within a professional environment.
- Demonstrate leadership, responsibility and accountability appropriate to their role.
- Possess strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Maintain high professional standards, including a commitment to continuing professional development and ethical practice.
Applicants with existing chartered or professionally registered status may be able to use these achievements to demonstrate elements of the required competencies. Individuals who do not hold traditional academic qualifications may still be eligible where they can demonstrate equivalent knowledge and experience.
Benefits of Registration
Registration with the RSES demonstrates professional competence, experience and commitment within the security profession. As an independent benchmark of professional achievement, registration can help distinguish you from your peers and provide confidence to clients, employers and colleagues that your knowledge and experience have been independently assessed.
Benefits of registration include:
- Independent recognition of your professional competence and experience.
- Demonstration of specialist knowledge and expertise within your chosen category.
- Enhanced professional credibility with clients, employers and peers.
- Commitment to maintaining professional standards and continuing professional development.
- Inclusion within a recognised community of security professionals and specialists.
- Support for career progression and professional development opportunities.
How to Apply
Applicants must be sponsored by an existing RSES registrant before submitting a pre-application. Once the pre-application has been reviewed, applicants will be advised on the most appropriate route to registration and the supporting evidence required. Where applicants do not hold the usual academic qualifications, they may be eligible to apply through the Technical Report Route (TRR), which enables knowledge and experience gained through professional practice to be considered as part of the application process.
The application process typically involves:
- Securing sponsorship from an existing RSES registrant.
- Completing and submitting a pre-application.
- Receiving guidance on the most appropriate route to registration, including the Technical Report Route (TRR) where applicable.
- Preparing and submitting the required application documentation.
- Attending a professional review interview.
- Assessment against the relevant RSES competencies and category requirements.
Application Documents
Applicants are required to provide supporting evidence to demonstrate that they meet the competency requirements for their chosen category. The exact requirements will depend on the application route and category selected, but may include:
- Completed application form.
- Sponsor statement from an existing RSES registrant.
- Current curriculum vitae (CV).
- Continuing Professional Development (CPD) records.
- Experience and project reports.
- Additional declarations or supporting documentation where required.
Applicants should refer to the RSES Guidance Document for full details of the evidence requirements applicable to their chosen registration category.
