About the RSES

The Register of Security Engineers and Specialists (RSES) is a members-only organisation that grants membership only after a rigorous assessment of the competence, experience, and professional integrity of individuals who contribute to securing the built environment, infrastructure, organisations, and critical assets. Our registrants represent a broad spectrum of disciplines, including engineers, applied scientists, security consultants, risk professionals, and other specialists whose expertise supports effective protective security outcomes.

As an organisation sponsored by the National Protective Security Authority (NPSA) and administered by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), we exist to promote excellence across the full breadth of security practice. This field encompasses the planning, design, implementation, and management of physical, personnel, operational, and cyber protective security measures that safeguard people, assets, and services against malicious threats, including terrorism, espionage, serious crime, and hostile activity.

We achieve this objective by providing a recognised benchmark of professional competence and reliability. This benchmark gives clients, employers, insurers, and stakeholders the confidence that RSES registrants have demonstrated their capability through a structured professional review process aligned to established standards. Registrants are required to uphold a clear code of professional ethics, demonstrate sound judgement, and maintain an ongoing commitment to continuing professional development, ensuring their knowledge and skills remain current in an evolving security landscape.

Membership categories

There are three levels of membership category which are broadly equivalent to technician, incorporated and chartered status. The categories are: Technician, Ordinary Member and Principal Member.

Registrants are encouraged to use the descriptor ‘Technician Member/Ordinary Member/Principal Member of the RSES’ in their professional correspondence.

Companies employing registrants are invited to include the categories at Ordinary Member and Principal Member under which they are listed on the RSES Company Competence List

Registrants are not listed in open-source documentation but if clients want to verify whether an individual is a Technician/Ordinary Member/Principal Member of the RSES they can contact rses@ice.org.uk
